MELBOURNE – Australia began a COVID-19 immunization campaign on Sunday, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison being among the first to receive Pfizer Inc.’s vaccine ahead of a broader national rollout on Monday.
Nursing home residents and staff and border force personnel also received their jabs in the suburbs of the nation’s largest city Sydney.
“It’s safe. It’s important. Join us on this Australian path that sees us out of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Morrison told reporters after receiving his first shot, urging fellow Australians to follow his lead.
The nation’s inoculation drive starts with the Pfizer vaccine and will include AstraZeneca Plc’s vaccine from March. The government plans to provide coronavirus vaccines to all Australians for free by the end of October.
